A native of Bunkie, Louisiana, Johnny Steele earned his Master of Landscape Architecture in 1977 before moving to Houston and beginning a distinguished career that has spanned nearly five decades. His remarkable eye for composition, architecture, and natural beauty has earned him a reputation for creating some of Houston’s most distinctive and memorable gardens.
Through Johnny Steele Design, Inc., Johnny brings artistry and thoughtful planning to every project. His approach considers the complete environment—from plantings and hardscapes to architectural elements and the way each space will be experienced. Supported by a talented team of designers and skilled craftsmen, the firm provides comprehensive design, installation, and landscape maintenance services tailored to each client and property.
Johnny’s work has received recognition from the American Institute of Architects, the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Associated Landscape Contractors of America, and the Texas Association of Landscape Contractors. His lasting contribution to Houston’s landscape is also reflected in the Johnny Steele Dog Park at Buffalo Bayou Park, which was named in his honor in 2014. Today, his work continues to be guided by creativity, craftsmanship, and a commitment to designing timeless outdoor spaces that are as functional as they are beautiful.
